A small amount of preparation before painters arrive can save time, protect belongings and make the whole project easier. You do not need to empty the entire house, but clearing access and deciding what stays in each room helps the crew start work safely and efficiently.
Bedrooms
Remove bedding, small furniture, lamps, artwork and personal items from walls. Larger beds and wardrobes can often stay if there is enough room to move them into the centre and cover them. Clear window sills and make sure curtains or blinds can be removed or protected.
Living and dining rooms
Move ornaments, electronics, floor lamps, rugs and small tables out of the work zone. Disconnect wall-mounted devices where practical and identify any items that need special care. Leave enough floor space for drop sheets, ladders and safe movement.
Kitchen
Clear benchtops, open shelving and items stored on top of cupboards. If cabinetry or trims are being painted, discuss access in advance. Food should be sealed away from sanding dust and paint products.
Bathroom and laundry
Remove towels, toiletries, laundry baskets and anything hanging on doors or walls. These rooms are smaller, so even a few loose items can make access difficult. Make sure surfaces are dry and ventilation is available.
Whole-house checklist
Confirm colours before the start date, arrange access and parking, secure pets, identify alarm sensors or delicate fixtures, and tell the crew about any areas that must remain usable. A clear plan for each room reduces disruption and helps the job stay on schedule.
