Good wall preparation is the difference between paint that simply changes the colour and paint that looks smooth and lasts. Most interior repaint problems start because dirt, loose material, cracks or glossy surfaces were not dealt with before the topcoat.
Clean the surface
Remove dust, grease and marks with a suitable cleaner, particularly around switches, kitchens and high-touch areas. Paint adheres best to a clean, dry surface.
Repair dents and cracks
Fill small dents, nail holes and stable cracks with an appropriate filler. Larger or recurring cracks may need proper plasterboard repair or investigation of movement before filling.
Sand for smoothness and adhesion
Sand repairs flush and lightly abrade glossy or rough existing coatings where needed. Remove sanding dust before priming or painting.
Prime the areas that need it
Bare plaster, new GIB compound, stains, exposed timber and some strong colour changes need the correct primer or sealer. Spot priming only works where the surrounding coating is already sound and compatible.
Finish with a final inspection
Use side lighting to check for ridges, pinholes and sanding marks before topcoating. Fixing them now is easier than trying to hide them after the finish coats are applied.
