A painting quote can look simple, but two prices may cover very different amounts of work. Choosing the right painter means understanding what is included, how the surface will be prepared, what materials will be used and what happens if something needs attention after the job is finished.
Ask what preparation is included
Preparation is often the biggest difference between a quick repaint and a durable finish. Ask whether the quote includes washing, sanding, scraping, filling, caulking, spot priming and treatment of mould or rust where needed.
Compare written scopes, not just totals
A useful quote should describe the areas being painted, the number of coats, products or paint system, preparation allowances and any exclusions. If one quote is much cheaper, check whether it includes the same scope before assuming it is better value.
Check insurance and site safety
Ask how the contractor manages ladders, scaffolding, dust, occupied areas and protection of floors, furniture and landscaping. For exterior or commercial work, site access and safety planning are especially important.
Look for clear communication
A reliable painter should be able to explain timing, weather delays, colour decisions and how variations are handled. Good communication before the job usually carries through once work starts.
Ask about warranty and final inspection
Find out what workmanship warranty is provided and whether you receive it in writing. A final walkthrough should also be part of the process so touch-ups or missed areas can be identified before the project is signed off.
